Online exploitation has quickly become an epidemic as technology becomes an increasingly central part of our daily lives. An estimated 1 in 8 children worldwide are affected by trafficking, making this a serious issue not only globally, but right here in our own communities.

One of the biggest challenges is that parents and children often don’t know what online exploitation looks like or how to recognize the warning signs. Children can be especially vulnerable because they may not know how to respond when someone pressures, manipulates, or threatens them.

Traffickers may gain a child’s trust and then use inappropriate photos, personal information, or other content the child is ashamed of to manipulate and control them. In some cases, they may threaten to share that content or encourage self-harm when the child refuses to comply.

Education and awareness are critical. When parents and children know what to look for, how exploitation happens, and what steps to take when something feels wrong, they are better equipped to recognize the danger and seek help.

As parents, if we’ve put a device in the hands of our kids, we’ve given the world access to them. We are responsible for understanding how trafficking works and how to protect our children. This event is for any adult with children in their lives: parents, grandparents, teachers, etc.
